Danny was born in Ballyfermot, Dublin. He is one of a family of eight, six brothers, one who is Catholic priest! and one sister. His first public appearance was at McKeons of Stoneybatter, one of the best singing pubs around at the time, where he preformed the Christie hit Yellow River. Bitten by the singing bug he headed for England in the early 70's and spent five years playing the Midland pub/club circuit and touring the American Air Force bases in Germany before heading for the bright lights of London. He then became involved in several bands, including the dubiously named Hooker and the provocatively named Snatch before forming the more decently named Weapon along with Jeff Summers, Baz Downes and Bruce Bisland. Weapon signed to Virgin Music and was invited as specials guests on Motorhead's 32 dates Ace Up Your Sleeve 1980 tour. They released one single It's A Mad Mad World b/w Set The Stage Alight, which reached number 2 in the Heavy Metal charts. The band later split, due to the age-old problem of managerial differences. Their, 1980 recorded, debut album Set The Stage Alight, was eventually released in 2003. In 1984, whilst awaiting his freedom from management and publishing contracts and various other forms of red tape, he formed Paddy Goes To Holyhead, and, as they say the rest is history Paddy Goes To Holyhead official debut was on St Patrick's Day 1985 at The Greyhound, Fulham Palace Road, London.
